TKAM- Character Relationships

     My two characters are Dill and Francis. I think two similarities between the two is that they are both children. A quote from the book that shows Francis is a kid says, "He was a year older than I,..." Scout at the time was still a kid and a year doesn't make a big difference. A quote in the book that shows Dill is a kid says, ""How old are you?," asked Jem, "four-and-a-half?" "Goin' on seven" "Shoot no wonder, then," said Jem," The fact that they think Dill is a four year old, definitely means he is still a kid.

     Their difference is that Francis keeps mentioning Atticus is a "nigger lover" but Dill has not said one bad thing about Atticus. A quote from the book that shows Francis insulting Atticus is, ""Just what I said. Grandma says it's bad enough he lets you all run wild, but now he's turned out a nigger-love we'll never be able to walk the streets of Maycomb again." This shows that he is trying to make Atticus look bad. Dill like I said before, doesn't make Atticus look bad or judge Atticus in any way. Atticus even did Dill a nice thing of not telling Dill's parents that he ran away. 

     The relationships to Scout are way different. Francis annoys and is disliked by Scout, and Dill is a good friend of Scout, and he is even engaged to her. A quote from the book says that Francis annoys Scout says, "The fact that Aunty was a good cook was some good compensation for being forced to spend a religious holiday with Francis Hancock." This goes to show that Scout completely dislikes him that she doesn't even want to spend a holiday with him. A quote where it says Dill is engaged to her and is a good friend to her is, "Dill concluded by saying he would love me forever and not to worry, he would come get me and marry me as soon as he got enough money together, so please write." This shows that they were very close to each other and had a very good bond.

     Both Francis and Dill had a powerful effect in Scout, but in different ways. Dill made Scout mad and made her want to beat him up. Dill on the other hand is the exact opposite, whenever he leaves he makes Scout feel lonely. A quote to show that Francis makes Scout want to beat him up is, "This time, I split my knuckle to the bone on his front teeth. My left impaired, I sailed in with my right, but not for long. Uncle Jack pinned my arms to my sides and said, "Stand still!"" This shows that Scout actually did end up beating up Francis because he kept on bad-mouthing Atticus. A quote to show that Scout felt lonely is, "Woth him, life was routine; without him, life was unbearable." This quote reveals the way Scout feels about Dill, she is very sentimental towards him.

    In conclusion, Dill and Francis were very different from one another and also had different effects and relationships with Scout.
